Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). This severe, bilateral and chronic allergic condition is most prominent in young boys living in warmer climates. Common comorbidities include asthma and allergic rhinitis. 32 VKC is thought to be an IgE-mediated hypersensitivity, but IgG, basophil and cellular delayed-type hypersensitivities may also be involved. 33 The diagnosis in this issue is vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), or atopic keratoconjunctivits (AKC) with Horner’s Trantas dots. VKC is a chronic mast cell/lymphocyte-mediated allergic inflammatory process of the conjunctiva.
Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), or dry eye disease, is a key finding in SS and in many inflammatory, autoimmune and collagen-vascular disorders. KCS is a multifactorial disease that involves changes in the tear film, resulting in damage to the ocular surface. 4 SS-related dry eye is associated with aqueous deficiency, although these patients may also have evaporative tear loss. Ocular allergic disease is an umbrella term which encompasses myriad hypersensitivity disorders of the ocular surface; affected structures include the eyelids, cornea and, most frequently, the conjunctiva.
It is an important clinical finding because pseudogerontoxon is often times the only clinical evidence of previous allergic eye disease.
